BLACK LITERACY
IT was wash day today and man i'm happy to be clean. I wear, sleep and exercise in the same clothes everday so its a big relief when I get to wash which is once a week. my clothes look, feel and smell so much better. AS you know I go to A.A. meetings nearly everyday and at these meetings we read a lot of literature about the program. they ask people if they wanna read or not,no one is force its all a volunteer thing. since i've been in the fellowship i've noticed that a lot of black people don't read very well, and its shameful at least it is to me. its shameful especially when you're in a room full of white people,it seems to not bother me when the crowd is all black. could someone please answer this question? if you know that you're a weak reader and you don't read well then why in the hell would you volunteer to read? HUH? for the life of me I just don't understand that! all you have to say is that "no I don't have my glasses" or not tonight. or just plain no! well last night at this meeting this YOUNG black man was attempting to read and I do mean attempt cause the brother couldn't read a LICK. I was so embarrassed I could have crawled through the floor. in my opinion about 70% of the black people that I hear reading in these meetings are reading far below the level that they should be. its pitiful, and like I say especially when you're in a room full of whites, or maybe its just me being overly sensitive. WHAT IS IT? do you think white people get embarrassed when a white person has trouble reading in a room of predominately blacks? huh? I don't think so, then why do I? here's the thing over 95% of the whites I hear reading are proficent readers, they read well and you can tell they read often, I think thats the problem with a lot of black folk they don't read! i'm reading a book now by ANGELA DAVIS, her autobiography. and i just finished a book called " in harms way" about the sinking of a world war 2 navy ship. after the black guy passed a white man picked it up in mid-sentence and read loud and clear as if to say this is how you do it. it was painful for me.I attended a microsoft word class here at the library and the instrutor had us read and do you know the asians from india who could barely speak english read better than the black americans. SAD
